"Plan B"...Niagara Falls or Toronto?Still Foggy over the Hudson! This will be an event! Let's go in force. So far everyone signed up has a seat...thanks to owner-members! This is how the route currently looks. The restaurant at KPOU called back and can't accommodate us because of a birthday and communion. We want to go Northeast so Tom Weber can join us from Boston. 10am depart Ithaca and head to KHPN. Hang a right at the Hudson, stay 2500 feet (in the Bravo with flight following) down around the lady and back north...up the coast to KDXR. Park at the north side at Business Aircraft Center...short walk to the mall and lunch at Brio Tuscan Grill. Lunch menu looks reasonable...Back home to KITH by three...slowest plane gets the bill at the bar! |

Eighteen intrepid aviators in five planes from East Hill down the Hudson River Corridor on January 17th, over Manhattan and up to Poughkeepsie for lunch! What an amazing day, both for the unusually cooperative weather and the way it all just worked out so beautifully. Here is an assembly of different viewpoints in all the collected media people donated. Our last NYC flight in 2002 is still available here. |

| The Stratus box is beautifully designed. It needs no wires and integrates a WAAS GPS and ADS-B antenna that sends data to the iPad on a built in Wi-Fi signal (find it in iPad "settings" like a hot spot) The integration with ForeFlight is beautiful...looks native. This will work with anyone's iPad. We got a very good signal at pattern altitude and this weather requires NO SUBSCIPTION. | |||

⇐ CFI Rob Shapiro VisitsIt was quite a surprise to see Rob. He taught at East Hill in the mid-1980s! He had a hand in teaching me to fly instruments (back when we really did use NDBs in the clouds) He lives in Burlington and flew in with a "Super Commander" with a beautiful "highway in the sky" Chelton system. Elson Shields: Our Drone Wizard ⇒Elson is a civilian drone pilot who has developed amazingly complex systems to collect insects for entomology studies. These planes are amazing.

| Our mechanic Adam Coombs inspecting the engine with board member Mike Meador and Don McAnn | We had two planes of members visit Finger Lakes Flying Service on Thursday to inspect the engine and ask questions. Final verdict; the NEW camshaft from Lycoming totally destroyed itself (and our engine) in 100 hours of operation. Metal propagated throughout the engine scoring the cylinders. This part is covered by warranty! We will have to haggle about the damage. | These are called "cam followers" and ride directly on the cam shaft. These were perfect after the recent IRAN. Compare these two: the one on the right looks like it has been in service for thousands of hours! |
Cirrus Video From EHFC Fly OutOur new member Nick Evertsen made it clear he was crazy about the Cirrus designs and he somehow found a seat in Brent's SR-22 on the way to breakfast in Oswego last Sunday! Here is a great little video he shot on the way up there. |

| The bad actor on our Mooney seems to be the #2 cylinder (specifically piston rings) They still need to perform some tests so we know when this plane will be back in service. This proves the value of oil monitoring. Ironically, member Mike Carman just took delivery of a nice Mooney MSE (we tried to steal it!) Congratulations Mike! Flying Magazine published a great article on the Mooney 201 model this month. | ||

| We had three planes and 10 brave souls for our early morning fly-out to Oswego County. Giff Foley got to bring his wife Katie who was visiting from the city and new member Nick Evertsen got a ride in Brent's Cirrus. Nile Gossa is back too! Easy flight and good food! | |

Mechanic At East Hill: Welcome Adam! For people in aviation around upstate New York, Adam Coombs is well known as a careful, meticulous mechanic having worked at Cortland, Tri-Cities and most recently at Taughannock Aviation. We are lucky to have Adam on board at East Hill fixing our daily problems promptly and performing our scheduled maintenance as well. The old Airquest (most recently IDI) hangar is being refitted as his home base with common parts like tires and lights as well as an office.Welcome aboard Adam. |

Listen: Mooney Out of Fuel Over the Clouds! When a Mooney pilot got into trouble last December, stuck above the clouds and running out of fuel, controllers at the Seattle tracon helped him to a safe landing (finally deae stick through the clouds). This amazing flight assist won the controllers the national Archie Award this week from NATCA. Good communications...fast action! All these audio clips are great listening...it's comforting to know there are professionals ready to help in emergency situations like these.

Thanks Dale! Great Show on Building a Sonex!Dale Anderson gave us a great presentation on how he built his Sonex. We even had the president of Cortland University attend! This was built from sheet aluminum; its not the pre-assembled version. Dale even built the engine that powers his plane (a VW 80HP engine) We should see this flying soon (once he gets his pilot's license!) EAA Banquet Feb 25th (You Are Invited!)Our local EAA Chapter 811 is holding it's banquet at the Varna Community Center on Saturday Feb. 25th. They serve an amazing dinner for $20 and Mike Brown will present the show on his flight to Colorado in N46493 (former club plane). Contact Art Muka with your intentions (aam6@cornell.edu) to join the party! |

| We had a great show with lots of participation...thank-you all who made it there. This was the launch of a new initiative at East Hill intended to "share the wisdom" of more experienced pilots in the club with those just starting out with cross-country flying. If you are going somewhere, I guarantee we have a member who has been there, already knows the route, the problems (even the best restaurants) and can provide some guidance. These four guys have received mentor training. We will build this program as the demand expands. If you have "been there, done that" and want to help mentor new pilots like this, please get in touch. Hopefully, more pilots will fly X-C and have a better, safer first experience with their "dream trip." | |||

Flight at 17,500This was a test flight and required to be up high so oxygen was required. You know the FAA rules but the real story is you start to go to sleep up high so wearing oxygen is a matter of life and death. To verify it's working we borrowed an "oximeter" (thanks Mike Thompson) which reads oxygen saturation in the blood through the color of your fingernail...cyanosis. We stayed conscious for several hours up there and enjoyed the sunshine! |

| Kevin Kremer and Nate Spiero were part of our original TC3 college program. Kevin visited recently and is a CFI at Merrill Field in Anchorage, Alaska. Nate is in the U.S. Air Force currently completing survival training and slated to fly an MC-130H (we are waiting for a current photo). Our proven record of success is important for developing our new aviation college program with Jamestown Community College. | |

Our member Shane Hesse is an instructor pilot in the US Army currently stationed in Germany. He spent an evening with us discussing his training and the military mission planning and risk management. Contrary to what many may imagine this process is detailed and comprehensive to assure safety and cover every known contingency. Shane played several video clips from his training that show how demanding the flights can be with combat considerations. Shane received his single-engine civilian certificate last summer and flew with us while on leave at the end of the summer. He is a native of Syracuse and currently active duty with the U.S. Army. |
